Opinion | More solar energy in Michigan will spark investment, job opportunities
As Michigan navigates the evolving landscape of energy production, solar power stands out as a practical, commonsense solution that benefits the state’s economy, environment and energy reliability. A repeal of PA 233, as is intended by a bill making its way through the Legislature, would stall the benefits that local and state governments are set to reap the benefits of.

The economic benefits of solar energy, which are set to be bolstered thanks to PA 233, are widespread. A recent report released by the Clean Grid Alliance underscores that every solar project creates jobs in installation, maintenance and related industries. Today, Michigan’s clean energy workforce surpasses 11,700 jobs, with tremendous opportunities for growth. These are well-paying, local jobs that help stimulate regional economic growth. Many projects also collaborate with union labor, ensuring high-quality work, safety and fair wages. As more Michigan communities adopt solar power, the cumulative effect is a boost to our local economies, fostering a more resilient economic landscape.
In addition to its economic advantages, solar energy contributes to a cleaner environment — a benefit that resonates across political and community lines. Solar panels generate electricity without harmful emissions, and advances in technology ensure that water that encounters the panels is free of harmful materials and protects groundwater and soil. Clean energy production helps reduce air pollution and lowers our carbon footprint. For Michigan, a state known for its natural beauty and the vital role of the Great Lakes, preserving the environment is a shared responsibility and a commonsense imperative.
Solar energy production enhances energy independence and grid resilience. By diversifying energy sources, Michigan becomes less vulnerable to the uncertainties of global energy supply and price volatility. Distributed solar generation — where energy is produced close to where it is consumed — can help stabilize the grid and provide backup power during outages or extreme weather events. This localized approach to energy production not only improves reliability but also strengthens overall energy security, which is exactly what Michigan needs.
Ultimately, an emphasis on clean energy represents a balanced, pragmatic approach to meeting Michigan’s current and future energy needs. It is a strategy that offers economic savings, job creation, environmental protection, and enhanced energy resilience — all grounded in commonsense benefits that cut across political ideologies. Michigan must continue to embrace solar power, investing in a more sustainable energy future and ensuring that the benefits of this transition are felt in every corner of our great state.
