Bridge Michigan is growing again, launching the search for an Outdoors Life Reporter to join our Environment Watch team and connect with readers in new and unique ways.

The newly created reporting position is expected to focus on Michigan’s incredible outdoors, from boating, beaches and snowshoeing to morel hunting, stargazing and fishing.

The latest hire follows expansions that have included a general assignment/breaking news reporter and the launches of Business, Health and Environment Watch teams since 2019.

“Michigan is graced with some of the most amazing lakes, forests and beautiful spots in the world, and they help connect us as Michiganders,” said Katy Locker, chief executive officer of the Center for Michigan, Bridge Michigan’s nonprofit publisher.

“Our readers have consistently told us they love Michigan as much as we do, and through their generosity and other funders, we’re able to create a beat to highlight that joy.”

The new reporter will join one of Michigan’s most decorated newsrooms and work closely with Kelly House, a former Michigan Journalist of the Year and a nationally recognized environment reporter.

The Outdoors Life Reporter is expected to produce deep accountability reporting that is Bridge’s hallmark, but also reach readers through regular newsletters, social media and meetups.

The job was partially inspired by the success of Bridge Michigan’s EV Summer Road Trip in July. House and two other Bridge staffers traveled around Lake Michigan in a rented Chevy Bolt to test the durability of the state’s charging network.

Along the way, they reported on wineries, campgrounds, wrote daily postcards on Bridgemi.com and met with readers.

“Michiganders are so proud of where they live and for good reason,” said Joel Kurth, Bridge’s executive editor of impact.

“Sometimes, we in the media miss that. We want to highlight what makes the state wonderful and deepen bonds with our readers, but do so with the journalistic quality and integrity that readers demand from Bridge.”

The deadline to apply is Sept. 20. The full posting and job requirements are available here.
